Christian Spoils Maidenhead's Jolley Boys Outing
Margate maintained their unbeaten home record under Nikki Bull with a 3-2 win in a pulsating game against Maidenhead United.
Christian Jolley came off the bench to net an 85th minute winner, but it wasn't all plain sailing for the Blues. They were two up at half-time, courtesy of goals from loanees Sean Shields and Matt Johnson but were pegged level immediately after the break by sub Sam Barrett, while Chris Lewington pulled off a string of great saves, even after Maidenhead captain Alan Massey was sent off.
Margate started brightly and felt agreived they didn't get more inside ten minutes, when Lewis Taylor surged into the area, got tripped, but stayed on his feet and shot inches wide, with no foul given.
Shields came close soon after when he cut in off the left channel and shoot agonisingly just wide of the near post from the edge of the box, via a deflection.
His first for the club followed not long after though when he struck a low free kick past the wall and to Carl Pentney’s left.
Danny Green saw a deflected cross tipped over the bar by Pentney minutes later while Chris Lewington brilliantly kept out Mark Nisbet’s powerful effort from range to keep his side ahead.
As Maidenhead started to grow into the match Johnson stopped them in their tracks with a skimming shot from range that found the net via the post, also his first goal for Margate.
Maidenhead made three changes at the break and it was one of those, Barrett, who reduced the arrears, moments after coming on by acrobatically turning home from close range.
Two minutes later he had levelled things, curling home straight from a corner from the right to stun the Blues.
Massey’s received his marching orders with a second yellow card not long later but that didn’t stop his side from attacking the Margate goal.
Barett wanted his hat-trick but was denied by Lewington who did well to keep out his 40 yard free-kick. Moments later he was denying Harry Pritchard, tipping his long range shot onto the bar.
Another superb stop from Pritchard followed soon after, after the Maidenhead left back walked in off the left channel and was denied from 12 yards.
Dave Tarpey fired a vicious free-kick from range towards goal but again Lewington was there to keep the away side frustrated.
Jolley made the most of those saves, again with his first for Margate, as his shot from the edge of the box looped over Pentney and in off the far post to seal another win for his team.
Johnson came close to adding late gloss as his sumptuous shot from 25 yards flew just wide of the post.
However, Maidenhead were inches away from sharing the points in injury time, as that man Barrett rattled the angle with a free-kick from range, but they were to leave Hartsdown Park empty handed.
