Women Confirm Third Place Finish

The season ended on a high for Margate FC Women as a 1-0 victory in the last game of the season secured them a third place league finish.

Sunday afternoon saw the ‘Gate make the journey to Thamesmead where they faced XL in their final fixture of the season.

Rather fittingly, the team’s first met in the opening match of the season where XL took the points and found themselves heading into the final match with equal stats across the board.

XL with a greater goal difference however could settle for a draw or win from the clash, the Margate side however knew only a win would see them secure third place.

A strong tackle led to King suffering an awkward tumble and picking up an injury to her shoulder, forcing a substitution early in he game. A slight shuffle and Ashby joined the squad from the bench slotting into the left back position.

Margate forced several attempts on goal, with a shot from Slevin skimming across the goal line.

XL too made some attempts on goal as they played well from the back, getting out of difficult spots and being quick on the counter. A superb save from Montgomery moments before the half-time whistle kept the sides at 0-0 heading in at half time.

Shortly into the second half a long Adams throw was headed on by Godden. An aerial assist from Meek saw the ball land at Greetham's feet and a composed and powerful strike placed the ball firmly in the bottom right corner to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Margate showed a real display of character and game management to ride out the next 25 minutes of the match. Defending strongly and a few incredible saves by Montgomery keeping the Blues 1-0 lead intact.

As the final whistle blew it was the away side who took the three points from 3rd place XL and climbed themselves into the 3rd spot in the final afternoon of the season.

The Blues now have a well-earned four week break before heading into preseason which begins with a home fixture against Deal Town Women on Saturday 8th July 2023, with kick-off at midday.
