Tunbridge Wells Foresters (H) - 28th January 2024

By David Hansen

After last week’s Kent FA Plate success, Margate Women return to the league as they host Tunbridge Wells Foresters at Hartsdown Park. A win this weekend will see the team into 3rd place!

Tunbridge Wells Foresters come into this match with 2 consecutive clean sheets, after a 5-0 win against Maidstone United in the Kent FA Plate.

Their most recent league fixture ended 0-0 against Parkwood Rangers and involved a red card for Macie Stapleton who will be suspended for the upcoming game.

Margate are in superb form coming into this one with 5 straight wins, scoring 17 goals and only conceding twice along the way. Last Sunday saw an amazing 3-0 victory against XL Academy in the Kent FA Plate with goals from Abbie Greetham, Rebecca Niblett and Paige Godden.

You can watch the highlights from the game here on Gate TV.

Players to watch:

For Tunbridge Wells Foresters we have chosen Rona Wignall. With 10 goals to her name she is the teams top scorer, 3 goals ahead of her teammates Annabel Stokes and Lauryn Underhill. With that type of goal scoring ability she will be one to watch out for as a danger to the Margate defence.

For Margate we have chosen Lily Kemp. Lily has featured in every game this season and has recently found good form including being part of the defence that kept a clean sheet against top of the league XL Academy. With Lily’s height, she is able to get her head to the ball and use her physicality to give attackers a hard day at the office. Lily will be looking to bring her form into the game on Sunday to help secure the 3 points.

Manager Steph Meek had her say ahead of the crucial league tie:

“We’re heading back into the league this week which is always nice. Cups are exciting but they take their toll physically and mentally. I can’t complain though, the team are thriving from the positive results.”

“There’s a degree of distortion to the league as we sit comfortably in 4th with up to 3 games in hand. In fact, this week we face the team currently in 3rd. A win will see us claim that position from them and close in nicely on the top two.”

“Although we have beaten this side before, most recently knocking them out of the league cup, they are a solid side that will take advantage of any lapse in concentration.”

“The weather made for difficult training this week. There were tired legs to contend with, and sense of excitement over the weekends result creeped into the session. But distractions aside, the players worked hard throughout.”

“I have every faith that this weekends performance will be as exciting as the last. I’ve grown to expect nothing less than an exciting display of showmanship and grit from this side.”

The match takes place on Sunday with kick-off at 3:00pm and tickets costing as followed:

Concessions - £1

Under 18s - £1
