Gate Knocked Out Of Cup
Evan Paris
It proved a step too far for Margate's Bluebirds as they fell to a 6-0 defeat in the Women's County Cup quarter-final to a quality Gillingham side four leagues above.
The enormity of the task at hand would be the equivalent of Margates men's first team being drawn in a cup against League One opposition such as Coventry or Sunderland.
The Gate's ladies battle well in the first half and were even disappointed going into the halftime break 2-0 down after a couple of silly errors lead to the visitors scoring.
The second half was similar to the first with the Gills excellent movement and quality of passing controlling the game. Clear cut chances for the bluebirds were rare as they found it hard trying to break down a formidable Gills back four.
As the game entered the final third Gillingham's fitness and conditioning shone through along with a strong bench to call upon as they went on to score 4 goals in the last 20 minutes including a penalty, giving them the 6-0 winning scoreline.
The Bluebirds wish Gillingham the best of luck in the semi-finals but more importantly would like to thank every supporter who came and cheered on the girls for 90 mins.
Regardless of the result the team walked off the pitch with pride and their heads held high as they had given 100%
In football you win or you learn and Gillingham showed and taught us what can be achieved when the game is played at their level.
Margate's team on the day was Lauren Watson, Olivia Godden, Rebecca Longley, Rebecca Slevin, Hannah Russell, Lucy Paris, Amy Robinson, Grace Phillips-James, Nicole Adams, Wiktoria Bukowska and Harriet Woolston along with Megan Longden, Shannon King, Annabelle Ashby, Isabelle Robinson and Katie Longley on the bench.
The games come thick and fast for the Bluebirds starting back on Sunday and league action against Cray Valley at home.
