Late Heartbreak For The Gate

By Tom Morris

Margate on the wrong end of a thrilling 4-3 score line as Jamie Cureton scores a brace for the second consecutive season to give Bishops Stortford the points.

It was our final Tuesday night game of the month as Bishops Stortford came to Hartsdown Park for an Isthmian Prem game full of goals and entertaining attacking football. In the early exchanges the chances were shared as Sanusi put a header just over before Cureton saw his free kick palmed away by Tupper. After a decent passage of play and a corner for the ‘Gate David Manu broke away and ran the length of the pitch to outfox Abnett and curl the ball home past the stranded Tupper. 1-0 Bishops Stortford after 23 minutes.

Cureton almost set up Barnwell before nearly connecting with a cross himself before being alert in the box to tap home a flick on from a Warman free kick just before half time. Preceding that goal there was a scramble in the box from a Richards corner but the ball wouldn’t cross the line and we went into the break 2-0 down.

Like last week the ‘Gate started the second half on the front foot and pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute. Ramadan passed to Elliott Reeves who charged towards goal, shimmied inside his marker and fired his shot through the keeper and into the roof of the net, 2-1 Bishops Stortford. Reeves then returned the favour to Ramadan 4 minutes later, but his shot hit a defender and after a half chance from another corner it looked more than likely we would be the team to score again. Unfortunately, against the run of play our visitors recycled the ball in midfield and a cross found Barnwell in the penalty area who, unmarked, was able to easily score a third goal in the 63rd minute.

Not letting our heads drop the players quickly went back on the offensive and Noel Leighton scored his third league goal of the season with a near post effort from another Richards corner, 2-3 now and still over 25 minutes to play. Oyenuga then replaced Sanusi as the ‘Gate continued to look for an equaliser and the fans didn’t have to wait long to cheer in another goal as Leighton grabbed his second of the evening with another close-range effort from a Ramadan cross. 3-3 now and just under 15 minutes left.

The next 10 minutes settled down as Bishops Stortford made a change and looked to see out the game, however there was another chance for Leighton who headed straight at the keeper on 88 minutes before the telling action of the half came in the 91st minute as Sessegnon misplaced a header back to the keeper and Jamie Cureton nipped in to lob Tupper in goal and send his team home with all 3 points.

Margate: Tupper, Abnett, Sessegnon, Prestedge ©, Johnson, Porter, Richards, Leighton, Reeves, Sanusi (Oyenuga), Ramadan

Subs: Holloway, Eyles, Thornby, Hatfull
