Margate started strongly with Alex Flisher being denied early on before Ben Swift saw his header cleared off the home sides line as the ‘Gate started as they meant to go on at the Kent Premier League Side.
The visitors should have been ahead soon after as Flisher done all the hard work on the left before rolling the ball to the feet of Orlando Smith who somehow managed to strike the ball against the post.
The first half drew to a quiet close as both sides began to fade in the humid heat but with no changes at the break it was Watts’s side who started the second half looking refreshed and ready for another 45 minutes.
Both Flisher and the sharp looking Sidney Sollis up front who saw half chances go missing before the latter claimed his first goal for the Blues as he diverted Dave Martins effort goalwards and past the hosts’ keeper to give Margate the lead in the 59th minute.
Liam Friend thought he had doubled Margate’s lead in the 65th minute as he saw his header again superbly cleared off the line by some excellent Deal Town defending.
A whole host of changes then followed as Watt introduced no less than six U21 players with Sid Warden, John Brown, Harvey Laws, Ben Fitchett, Jack Fenton, Harvey Killick and Stan Waller all make their senior debuts.
It was Sid Warden who then doubled Margate’s lead on 75 minutes as he headed home at the back post from Flishers cross to give the Gate an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Flisher almost grabbed his first goal for the Club in the dying moments after some great play down the left saw him set free but his effort went inches wide as Margate enjoyed an opening pre-season win.
