It was a nightmare start for the Blues as the hosts took the lead after just 29 seconds as Alex Smith was left free at the back post to slam past Henly to give the Gate the worst possible start.
The hosts should have trebled their advantage just moments later when Smiths cross was agonizingly put wide by Romain with the Margate back four struggling to contain the attacking front line of the Reds.
Margate then lost Midfielder Alex Osborn to injury as he was replaced by Kane Rowland in the 18th minute with a nasty looking ankle injury.
It may have taken 20 minutes but Margate began to find their feet with new signing Charles Banya, Harry Phipps and Lewis Taylor all seeing half efforts cleared away by the Borough backline.
Despite seeing more of the ball, Margate should have been 3-0 just minutes before the break as a ball into the box was sliced by a Margate defender onto the bar and away for a corner, leaving Margate with 45 minutes to try and claw back their two goal deficit.
There was worse injury news for the Gate just 10 minutes into the second half as Chris Sessegnon struggling with an arm injury was replaced by Keanu Williams who joined the front two of Banya and Rowland as Margate began to throw caution to the wind.
Margate thought they had halved the arrears moments later as Phipps rose highest in the box but saw his header hacked off the line by the Borough defence. The Gate pressure was mounting and another good opportunity went begging a few minutes after as Rowland took the ball down well but slipped as he was about to pull the trigger.
The visitors got their rewards on 62 minutes as Williams took a shot from the edge of the area which deflected past the home keeper to make it 2-1 with just under 30 minutes to play.
Another injury, this time to Brett Johnson meant he was replaced by Fitzsimons and Margate just couldn’t find that equaliser in the dying moments although they almost got their point in the 92 minute as Phipps rose highest but saw his header roll agonizingly wide of the post.
