It was Rod Stringers Chelmsford who started slightly brighter than Margate as Josh Rees fired an early chance past the post, however Margate were to quickly get into the game with Ira Jackson whipping a fantastic free-kick which caused a moment of panic in the Clarets back-line.
Margate fans thought they had their first goal since New Year’s Day as Clarets Keeper Ross Fitzsimons sliced a clearance to Jake Phillips on the half way line who unleashed a shot from half way only to see the ball float inches over the bar.
Margate had a couple of more half chances with Aiden Palmer and Hakeem Adelakun creating chances before Chelmsford were awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute as Christopher Dickson was adjudged to be hauled over in the box allowing Shaun Jeffers to slam home the spot kick to give Chelmsford a half-time lead.
Chelmsford started the second half much stronger and thought they had doubled their lead in the 47th minute however the referee rightly agreed that Chris Sessegnon had been fouled so the effort was ruled out. Goal scorer Jeffers nearly doubled the lead moments later as his powerful header sailed inches over the bar.
Ira Jackson once again forced Fitzsimons into a fine save shortly after as he cut inside and let a fierce effort go which was heading top corner until the outstretched hand of Fitzsimons turned it wide.
Adelakun came inches from equalising for the Blues as his shot on the angle clipped the far post before Chelmsford confirmed the three points as Joshua Hill rose highest in the box to nod the Clarets into a 2-0 lead which condemned Margate to their 18th straight defeat.
