Thalassitis’s return was the only change made by manager Steve Watt who has certainly steadied a rocky Margate ship this season since his appointment and it looked as though the Gate would claim three points here until a sensational 25 yard volley undone Jonathan Miles work in the Gate goal.
After going in front it was St Albans who were kick started into life and they threw plenty of pressure Margate’s way with on-loan goalkeeper Miles being equal to everything thrown at him. The visitors had Tarik Moore-Azille to be thankful to mid-way through the first half as he superbly made a last ditch block on the line to prevent an almost certain equaliser.
St Albans rattled the cross bar moments later as they continued to pile on the pressure to a Margate back line which remained resolute with Moore-Azille and Ben Swift at the heart of it. The visitors didn’t offer much more going forward in the first half until the 43rd minute as Thalassitis met a Dave Martin cross, however his effort was straight at the home keeper.
Margate looked to start the second half as well as the first and almost got the breakthrough in the very first minute of the second half as Akindayini broke free however his dinked effort was clawed out of the air by the Saints keeper.
That was pretty much all Margate had to offer again the half as they soaked up constant pressure from the hosts front three who were causing problems but were constantly denied by fine saves by Miles, resolute defending by the Margate back four and some dreadful finishing.
The Blues would have thought their luck was in as they turned another effort off the goal line in the 90th minute as they looked like they would hold on for three vital points which would have improved their slim hopes of staying in the division.
There was to be heartbreak for the visitors though as the game ticked over into the 96th minute and St Albans Midfielder Walker unleashed a sensational 25 yard volley which went top corner to leave the Blues almost certain of relegation.
Margate are back in action on Friday 14th April 2017 as they make a long trip west to face Weston Super Mare in the Vanarama National League South with kick off at 3pm.
