Skipper Swift Looks Forward To New Campaign

By Ryan Day

Margate Captain Ben Swift says things are looking positive ahead of the new season, but acknowledges that results in pre-season account for nothing come the season opener on Saturday 10th August.

The Blues have made an unbeaten start to their pre-season campaign with three wins and one draw, however the newly appointed captain isn’t reading too much into the Gate’s early good pre-season form.

“It has been a positive start to pre-season with three very good wins and a draw against a good Welling United side who obviously play a step higher than us, but we are aware that a positive pre-season doesn’t guarantee a positive start in the league so we still need to remain focused”.

Swift was named captain this summer by ‘Gate boss Jay Saunders and he is relishing the extra responsibility this upcoming season.

“To be made captain by the Gaffer is something I am really honoured about. I am relishing the extra responsibility but ultimately even though I am the Captain we all have a responsibility on the field to make sure we are performing at our best and achieving as much we can for the fans”.

The former Aston Villa and Maidstone United defender has been praised in the opening weeks of pre-season for what appears to be a solid defensive partnership being formed with new signing Dan Johnson, and Swift says he is enjoying playing alongside the former England C International.

“Dan is a great partner at centre half alongside me. He has played at a very good level and reads the game well and I think that defensively this year across the whole of the back four and Jon (Miles) in goal we are looking pretty solid”.

Next up for the Blues is a Thanet derby against Ramsgate, and whilst Swift is aware what it means to supporters, he believes the game will be more about fitness and competitiveness than the final result.

“It is a big game in terms of the rivalry and of course we want to win for our supporters and send them home happy. We must remember this is still pre-season and fitness and minutes in the bank is more important than results at the moment”.

“Having said that a few of the boys from here last season have gone there and they are expected to do really well in their division this year with what appears on paper a very good side. It will be a good test for us and we will make sure we do everything right to ensure we get the fitness and hopefully the right result”.
