'Gate Defeated At Hornchurch

Margate lost for the first time of the 2021/22 season as they succumb to a 2-1 defeat to Hornchurch FC at ‘The Stadium’ despite taking the lead on a misty evening in Essex.

Margate started brightly with Ben Greenhalgh looking to force the play with a swerving shot just flying over the bar as the ‘Gate looked grab an early goal. The hosts started to find their rhythm shortly after as Ollie Muldoon saw a free-kick well saved by Pat Ohman, tipping it away for a corner.

The hosts continued to cause Margate problems as Jili Buyabu met an Ellis Brown cross which smacked off the post before Ohman collected to avert any further danger.

The Blues were quick out the traps in the second half as James Bessey-Saldanha broke down the right and fired a low cross into the box which was met by Greenhalgh to give the ‘Gate an early second half advantage.

The visitor’s tails were up and it was Vance Bola who was soon causing trouble as he weaved in and out of the Hornchurch backline before seeing his low effort blocked superbly to deny Margate going further ahead.

Hornchurch began get a foothold in the second half as Sam Higgins began to show his aerial threat by meeting crosses that were being launched into the box. The equalising goal came shortly after and Margate felt aggrieved as Hornchurch broke away after it appeared Bessey-Saldanha was fouled whilst attacking, however play was waved on as Buyabu crossed for Higgins who leapt highest to nod home a home leveller.

It was the hosts that were in the ascendency as they looked to turn the game on its head as Higgins again saw a header well saved by Ohman shortly before the hosts did go ahead as Higgins headed home unmarked to put Hornchurch ahead with the visitors infuriated that the linesman’s flag wasn’t raised for an offside.

Margate threw everything at the home side in the final ten minutes and thought they had levelled in injury time as Ben Swift saw a header cleared off the line before Sam Blackman crashed the ball home only for the linesman’s flag to be raised for offside as Margate suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
