Ten Man Margate Dealt Cruel Late Loss
Margate lost their first game in eight games, as Eastbourne Borough's Sam Beales' eighty-fifth minute winner was enough to separate the sides.
The setback came after Chris Lewington brilliantly saved Nathaniel Pinney's first half penalty, while the Blues had to play for over 35 minutes with ten men, when Charlie Wassmer was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
The 'Gate started the game slowly but still had the best of the chances, as Wassmer flashed a header just wide of the target from Danny Green's corner.
Freddie Ladapo then saw a bending effort deflected just past the post, with Danny Green's sharp shot towards the near post was kept out by Lewis Carey's left boot.
Five minutes before the break, Eastbourne squandered a huge chance when Wassmer was given his first yellow for a trip in the box. Lewington showed his prowess yet again though, flying full stretch to his left to push Pinney's effort wide.
This seemed to spur Margate on in the second half and a minute after the break Ladapo really should've scored when he was found free in the box but he side footed it straight at Carey from close range.
The chances kept on coming as the 'Boro stopper then did well to keep out Danny Green's skimming shot from the edge of the area and Matt Johnson smashed an overhead kick inches over the angle as the ball was recycled.
After the good start, Wassmer was shown a red card after tripping Pinney, leaving his side defending deep with Eastbourne enjoying the lion-share of the ball.
However, the best chances still came the way of Margate, including a fantastic effort from Nathan Green, who flew off his left wing before rattling the bar with an audacious outside of the boot effort from 20 yards.
Ladapo smashed a shot into the side netting on the turn, that half the ground thought was in, before the late sucker punch from Beales. After a ball from the right was sliced into his path, Beales slammed a low shot into the far corner to see Nikki Bull lose his first home game.
