Derby Defeat For Battling Blues
Margate fell to their first defeat under the management of Nikki Bull courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at Maidstone United.
Vas Karagiannis curled home a free-kick early in the second half to make the difference, once Jake Goodman had levelled just before the break after Joe Healy's opener.
Margate started the game brightly, as Luke Moore shot from the edge of the box inside five minutes had Lee Worgan scrambling to touch it wide of his far post.
The Blues continued to dominate the chances as Goodman lashed an effort from a corner high over the bar from 10 yards.
Midway through the half, former Margate player Healy grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck to help his team notch an opener. After shooting tamely over the bar a few minutes earlier, the midfielder popped up unmarked an the far post, allowing him to hit a low shot powerfully past the helpless Chris Lewington.
Moments later, Lewington had to be at his best to keep his side in the game, as Healy again found space, this time shooting high towards the near post, that only took a good stop from the Margate goalkeeper to deny him.
Margate were on level terms late in the half though, as Matt Johnson's low strike from the edge of the box flew towards a crowd of players, with Goodman flicking the ball home to score his second goal for the club.
Alex Akrofi and Jack Paxman both wasted good chances early in the second half, blazing wide and high respectively, as the hosts started brightly after the break.
Karagiannis soon took advantage of his team's dominance, by curling home a free-kick from the edge of the box, after he initially won the set piece,
Margate pushed for an equaliser as nice play from Sean Shields and substitute saw Freddie Ladapo volley over the bar on the stretch.
The in form striker came even closer when Worgan had to be sharp at his near post to keep out his header from Jamie Taylor's left wing cross.
He then showed unbelievable skill to dance around three Maidstone defenders on the byline but his pull back evaded his awaiting teammates.
As the Blues threw men forward in injury time, Karagiannis broke quickly before hitting a shot fiercly towards the top corner that Lewington did well to tip over.
