Gate Exit Emirates FA Cup

Margate were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup after two second half goals from hosts Concord Rangers proved enough to push the Vanarama National League South side into the next round.

The Gate’s management team were forced into a number of changes, with senior players including Tom Wynter, Alex Brown and James Rogers ruled out through injury, whilst striker Sid Sollis was cup tied.

In the opening 10 minutes, both teams were looking to carve an early advantage. Young midfielder Chris Barnard came close for the visitors with an effort after just two minutes but his shot cannoned off a defender.

Concord created a handful of chances. Firstly, a long throw by Green fell to Billy Knott in but his shot went over the bar.

And minutes later, Pollock produced a looping header which Margate goalkeeper Henry Newcombe comfortably watched go over.

As Margate continued to hold their own, clear-cut opportunities for either side was lacking.

The visitors showed defensive composure as the deadlock remained unbroken going into the break.

Concord came close to taking the leader when Ward unleashed a fantastic strike, only to be matched by Newcombe who pulled off a smart save.

As the half wore on, so did Margate’s luck and they fell behind after 60 minutes when a set piece was comprehensively finished by striker Jack Midson.

Margate were able to introduce Alex Flisher after 75 minutes, the former-Maidstone man making his long-awaited competitive debut for the club.

After a long spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury, Flisher's introduction was a real highlight for Margate supporters who saw glimpses of what they can look forward to during his 15 minutes back on the pitch.

Whilst Margate sought an equaliser, it was the hosts who grabbed the game’s next and final goal, doubling their advantage on the 86th minute to secure their progression in the cup competition.

A disappointing Cup exit for The Gate who held up admirably against their higher placed hosts with a number of key players absent from proceedings.

After a number of weeks on the road, Margate return to Hartsdown Park next Saturday 29th September as they welcome Haringey Borough in the Bostik League.

Tickets for that game can be purchased here.
