Watt Reacts To Staines Point

Margate Manager Steve Watt felt his side had no-one else to blame but themselves as they surrendered a two-goal lead away at Staines on Saturday afternoon.

Having taken the lead courtesy of goals from Jack Evans and Liam Friend, the hosts capitalised on two moments of an otherwise accomplished defensive display which disappointed Watt at full time.

“The mistake for the first goal set off a panic button and we played deeper which you can’t do against a team like Staines.”

“You have to keep high and at their throats as they will give you chances but it’s disappointing as I felt we were in control for 80 minutes.”

Watt added, “They had a couple of good chances in the first half, Lenny has made some smart saves, but I thought we controlled a good attacking side and limited them to very little.”

With plenty of big games going on across the League, Watt’s attention is more focused on his side who he knows could be in a far greater position than they are.

“I don’t need to look at the table to know where we’re at. Points given away in the final stages of games has cost us the league title; not cost us the play-offs. It’s cost us a title challenge.”

“We’ve been in front of games and thrown away points which could have put us at the top of the league right now. We’re a team that’s hard to beat and I thought we were good enough against Staines to earn three points.”

“But we’ll go again with these two big games and until anything is mathematically possible, we’ll keep pushing.”

Whilst Watt’s squad has been depleted in recent weeks, Saturday’s display and the team’s form against the League’s top sides means there’s plenty to be optimistic about when approaching upcoming games against Billericay Town and Dulwich Hamlet.

“We’re very good against the top teams, we’ve lost just one game so far against the top eight and that’s a great record to have but we’ve had too many draws.”

“It’s good we’re playing against big teams as there’s extra motivation, but we’ve just got to try and win the next two games and see where that takes us.”

“There’s a lot of football to play, at this point in the season there’s lots of twist and turns, we’ll look to win our two remaining games and see what happens elsewhere.”

Make sure you secure your seat for Margate’s final scheduled game at Hartsdown Park with the visit of title challengers Billericay Town this Saturday. Pre-purchase your ticket here.
