Margate started the game brightly and took the game to Whitehawk who had won their previous four games. Alex Osborn playing in a more attacking role created the Blues first chance as he saw his cross collected by Ross Flitney before Buchanan could connect.
Whitehawk created their first chance soon after as Danny Mills turned in the Margate box before firing a low shot straight at Ward. That chance seemed to spur Whitehawk on and they took the lead on 11 minutes as Mike West headed home at the back post to give the Hawks an early lead.
Margate forced another chance after falling behind as Buchanan swivelled in the Whitehawk box before seeing his weak shot collected comfortably by Flitney.
The Gate fell further behind on 23 minutes after some neat work on the right by Mills who saw his low cross turned into his own net by Chris Sessegnon to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
The rest of the half was played very much in the Midfield with Buchanan creating further half chances but to no avail as it remained 2-0 at the break. Margate Manager Nikki Bull watching on from the stands made a half time substitution with Danny Fitzsimons replacing Yado Mambo at the heart of the defence.
Margate started the second half with a real meaningful intention to attack and they flew out of the traps at Whitehawk forcing several early corners. The Blues almost found the net in the 51st minute as Buchanan raced through before cutting back inside and seeing his effort deflected into the hands of Flitney.
The Blues were fighting for an opening goal and Buchanan was superbly denied on the half volley from Flitney before Akindayini then fired an effort inches wide as pressure began to grow on the Whitehawk goal.
With chances going by the wayside Margate were unable to grab the goal that would have made an entertaining final five minutes, however it was the Hawks who should have added a third in stoppage time as they fired a chance over from five yards with the Margate goal gaping wide open.
