It was the hosts who started the brighter with on-loan Millwall Striker Alfie Pavey forcing Valery Pajetat into a low dive down to his right. Margate forced their way straight back at Hampton & Richmond with Ben Swallow forcing an effort goalwards.
Hampton started to stamp their authority on the game and took the lead on 22 minutes as Pajetat dropped the ball from a cross under pressure allowing Pavey to tap home his first for the Beavers.
After falling behind, Margate started to get back into the game with Dean Morgan seeing his free-kick well held before Jake Phillips headed inches wide from a corner when it looked easier to score from six yards out.
Margate continued to pressure the Hampton goal but to no avail as the two sides went in for the half time break with Hampton still leading 1-0 thanks to Pavey’s 22nd minute goal.
The second half started with the hosts being the more dominant as Pavey forced Pajetat into several saves early in the half.
Nikki Bull introduced new signing Jerson Dos Santos with just over twenty minutes to go alongside Mourice Harrison as the Blues went in search of a point that they so desperately needed in their bid for survival.
Margate however just couldn’t get an opportunity in the final twenty minutes and it was Hampton who had three clear chances to extend their lead with Chris Sessegnon hacking one off the line in the final minutes to keep the score at 1-0.
Margate are still waiting to learn the extent of an injury sustained by Brett Johnson who was stretchered off with six minutes left with a leg injury.
Defeat for Margate leaves them bottom of the Vanarama National League South nine points from safety and face Wealdstone next at Hartsdown Park on Saturday 18th February 2017.
